Virtual Currency is growling less and less profitable!

News.com has a good article about the in game currency growing as a commodity. The “tools of the trade” are also getting better which is producing more much faster. This is one of those history repeats itself moments. Anyway here is the link to the article.

“PALO ALTO, Calif.–Brock Pierce, the CEO of Affinity Media, which used to own IGE, one of the world’s largest marketer of the virtual goods and currencies of games like World of Warcraft, EverQuest and others, is looking tired.

Earlier this year, Affinity sold IGE, but it still has a hand deep in the market for virtual weapons, currencies and the like.

For years, Brock’s companies, which in many ways have created–or at least perfected–the booming secondary market for the virtual worlds of those games, have been seen as all-powerful entities that almost laugh in the face of publishers like Blizzard Entertainment, Sony Online Entertainment and others who decry the notion that anyone would trade their games’ virtual assets for real money.

But now, Pierce told CNET News.com at the Virtual Goods Summit here, Affinity is finding it harder and harder to make the big profits it used to. And that’s because, he said, virtual assets are increasingly a commodity and, therefore, the margins on sales of WoW gold and other virtual goods are rapidly shrinking.

In fact, he said, as Chinese competitors get more and more sophisticated, they are also willing to accept less and less profit margin. And that means, “they’re perfectly happy to accept $20,000 in profit on $2 million of revenue.”

That, for all you out there without a calculator, is a 1 percent profit margin. Hardly what would make it easy for an American company bent on giving its executives a comfortable lifestyle to be happy.

And that may be why, after all these years at the helm of IGE and now Affinity, Pierce said he’s looking to find someone to take over for him as CEO. But he also said he’s having a devil of a time locating the right candidate. No one else, it seems, has the right skills to take Affinity and transition it to the next stage of its development, one in which the Chinese gold farming operations stay in the rear view mirror.

To be sure, the execs at Blizzard and Sony Online are not feeling too sympathetic for Pierce and his fellow secondary market traffickers. But there is a mutual interest for them as they both look at the Chinese competition becoming more and more powerful.

What will it all mean? No one knows. But for Pierce, as he bounces around the world at a fierce pace, cutting deals, overseeing Affinity’s operations in many countries and still trying to get home once in a while, it’s a very exhausting time. And it seems like he wants out.”

WoW Patch Released and Blizzard’s message about bot software!!!!

Ah another patch! Check out the notes here.

In other news an official at Blizzard has posted about “Disciplinary Action” on the forums and on the main page. Here’s the forum post by Blizzard Poster Drysc:

In the US and Europe, we recently banned several thousand accounts associated with the use of botting programs that fully automate player actions, such as killing and looting monsters. We take these attempts to bypass the rules and standards of the game extremely seriously, and we will continue to aggressively monitor all World of Warcraft realms in order to protect the service and its players from the negative effects of cheating.”

Well all I can say is congrats to Blizzard for raising the price of gold for a couple of days. Keeps the hard working virtual business man in business! haha!

Glider profiles that repair and sell loot?

A new site has ingeniously made Glider profiles profitable. These profiles are much harder to make than standard profiles. But they run your waypoints and then sell the trash loot to the vendor and even repair. Now it’s much easier to go longer without human interaction. Here’s their site. They have a free demo for those of you who want to check it out! It’s also possible to make your own Glider profiles with a tool that actually comes bundled with the Glider software. It’s called PGEdit.

Hopefully I will be able to make a tutorial on how to use the software so that you too can make your own vendor profiles. These profiles can easily make you half the profit you currently get!  Stayed tuned for the tutorial.

Well the Glider forums are down again and I’m pretty sure anytime that happens it’s because of some bans. Ouch! Can’t wait to see these numbers :(

Blizzard bans WoW accounts

It has come to my attention that this evening Blizzard closed accounts for violation of their terms of use. A lot of accounts were closed due to third party programs like bots. I’m not sure about the number of accounts banned but nothing would surprise me. Stay tuned!

Introduction To Making Money Playing WoW: Pt 1

There are so many ways to make money playing your favorite MMORPG. I will explain some of the simpler ones that will hopefully get you going in the right direction. I have used all of these methods myself. Try some out and if it doesn’t quite meet your expectations try the next one. You can do one or a combination of methods to get that cash flowing into your hands. So here they are:

1) Sell Gold: You farm gold and sell it to customers. This is usually the easiest way to get started. It does not take long to farm gold and any character can do it. The objective is to make gold as fast as possible. There are quite a few ways to go about gathering gold. If you’re still trying to get to the maximum level I would suggest taking it easy. Do quests which involve killing monsters. These quests usually give some gold as well as monster loot. I can make 100g easily selling nothing but grey and white items to the vendor.
Another possible method is to go instance or raid. If you’re in a good guild you can get some amazing drops from doing this. Some say there is where the money is at!
Lastly you could do it the old fashioned way and grind, grind, grind. Yes, it’s extremely boring. However knowing what mobs to grind on and what they drop can significantly increase your gold. Not to mention how much you can make from vendor trash items. These days for grinding there are a few items you want to aim for with auction house sale prices:

Primal Fire – 30 – 45g each
Primal Air – 30-40g each
Primal Water – 25-35g each
Primal Mana – 20-30g each
Primal Life – 15-25g each
Primal Earth – 5-10g each
Primal Shadow - 70s-2g each

Check out Allakhazam to find where these beauty’s drop. For serious gold farmers there is a guide that most will call a requirement. Valkor’s Gold Farming Guide has helped me rake in over 200g an hour! No matter what type of character I play Valkor’s guide will tell you exactly what, where, and how to farm!

2) Offer Power Leveling Services: Customers pay you to level a character for them. This might be your calling if you’re REALLY good at it. Power leveling is not instant as gold but there is a lot more to earn. For the fastest possible power leveling service (and you better be fast or there goes your business) you absolutely need to learn and master Brian Kopp’s Alliance and Joana’s Horde power leveling guides. These two have set world records for fastest leveling. I personally own both and I cut my leveling time in half.

3) Sell Finished Accounts: You create a new account, level a character to level 60 or 70, than you sell the entire account with any gold and items on it. This is very similar to power leveling except it’s not someones account until you sell it. You can easily make $400 or more depending on the characters layout.

Thanks for reading a quickie guide I pulled together to help out those interested in this “career”. I will be writing Part 2 about where to market your virtual goods! Stay tuned!
